Meet Alexander Barbee

This month's student of the month is an overcomer in more ways than one.

Q: Describe yourself as a person.

A: Honest, kind and caring. I'm also good-hearted, hard-working, fair, energetic, have a good sense of humor, and am silly at times. I love family, God, church, and friends.

Q: What grade are you in, and what courses are you taking or will you take? Do you have a particular reason for selecting these courses? Do you have any long-term goals in mind?Alexander Barbee

A: I'm in the 7th grade, taking language arts, history, math, science, and Bible. I take Bible to learn more about God so I can be closer to Him and be a better Christian and a better person. I want to go to college and become an architect. Also, it would be really cool if I could get a scholarship for playing soccer and play soccer in college.

Q: How long have you been enrolled with AOA? What circumstances led to you being enrolled with AOA?

A: I have been with AOA for nearly a year. I wasn't learning very much at school. Also, I have dyslexia and a neuromuscular disorder with my eyes, and the school system refused to consider these disabilities so I could get the help I needed in learning. My parents thought AOA was the perfect solution, and it has been. I love AOA and all of my teachers, who have always had time to help me. With my AOA teachers, I feel I can learn anything!

Q: What aspect of AOA do you enjoy the most?

A: I really like being able to call my teachers and talk to them. They are really smart, nice, and helpful. They always know the subject very well and know how to teach things to me in a way that I can understand. They are always kind and patient but never mean, hateful, grouchy or impatient. I also like getting my schoolwork done in a timely manner and not having all the distractions like I had in public school.

Q: Describe your hobbies, interests, etc.

A: My first love is soccer, and I could play soccer all day long! I play club soccer and this year I am playing up with a team a year older than me. My position is right defender, but I also play midfield. My favorite soccer team is English Premier League team Manchester United.

In addition to soccer, I love my pets. I have a border collie, named Daisey, and a lilac point Siamese cat named Annie that I play with a lot. My church and youth group are very important to me, and I'm very active in both. I also enjoy listening to all types of music, whittling, fishing, riding my bike, playing with friends, and just being outside.

Q: Do you have a personal testimony that you would be willing to share? If so, please write it below.

A: I had dyslexia, but no one knew it. It was difficult for me to read and keep up with class. People thought I was lazy because of dyslexia. It also affected my self confidence. There was a special doctor that I went to for another eye problem, and he told me I had dyslexia. Then I had to learn to read all over again. I improve every day and I hardly notice my dyslexia today.

Q: What are some of your favorites (e.g. food, movie, Bible story/verse, sport, music, etc.)?

A: My favorite foods: chocolate, seafood, my mom's chicken, my mom's chicken and dumplings, my mom's potato soup, my mom's omelets, my dad's homemade ice cream, my Memaw's sweet potato pie, and my Nana's pumpkin pie.

My favorite movies: Iron Man, Uncle Buck

My favorite sports: soccer

My favorite music: Mr. Hudson, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Usher, David Guetta, Michael Jackson

Q: Are you a member of any organizations or church groups? And/or do you volunteer some place special?

A: I'm an active member of our church's youth group. Our youth group does church service every third Sunday for the residents at a Methodist Nursing Home. I also play Classic Level Club Soccer, and I play for the FCCA Cabarrus U14 Select Team.

Q: If you could use three words to describe yourself what would they be? Why is that?

A: Energetic, honest, and hard-working.

I have so much energy inside me that I have to be doing something all the time. I'm always truthful, even when I have been in the wrong. At home, I do a lot of stuff to help out because my mom is disabled. I don't mind working hard because it makes me feel good. I believe you should work hard at everything you do and always try your best to do a good job.

Q: What are your future plans or dreams for college and/or career?

A: I want to go to college and get a degree in architecture. It would really be nice to get a scholarship playing soccer at a college. Once I'm an architect, I want to design and build not only big, huge buildings, but, also buildings that are different, unusual, and unique. I want people to look at my buildings and know that I built them because I have my own style, that's not like everybody else's style.

Q: Who is the most significant role model in your life? Why?

A: My mom is the biggest role model in my life. She has three autoimmune diseases (Meniere's disease, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia) and is disabled. She deals with constant pain and unpredictable vertigo every day of her life, and her diseases are not curable, but she still has a positive attitude about life.

Every day I help her all I can because there are a lot of things that she can't do, and I love her. She does everything she can for my sister and me, and family is the most important thing to her. She never gets mad or angry because she is sick. She just counts her blessings and thanks God that she is so blessed.

Q: After what motto do you model your life?

A: "Don't give up; don't ever give up." -Jim Valvano

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

A: My most treasured possessions are my pocket knives that used to belong to my Poppa and my great grandpa.

Q: Is there anything you have always wanted to do but haven't done yet?

A: I want to go on a cruise to the Caribbean and see everything there.

Q: If you could meet anyone, who would that be?

A: Wayne Rooney, the striker for Manchester United in England.

Q: What would others be surprised to learn about you (unusual hobbies or skills)?

A: I love to whittle.

Q: How do you want to be remembered when people look back on your life?

A: I want people to remember me as a famous world renowned architect and a good man.

Q: Of what accomplishment in life are you most proud?

A: I am most proud of overcoming dyslexia in my life.
