A 2014 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, Calvin Wetzel teaches middle and high school math at Alpha Omega Academy. His favorite part of teaching is watching students’ enthusiasm when they comprehend a new or difficult concept.
“In my last teaching position, the most fulfilling thing to me was to see a student get excited about understanding something,” Wetzel said. “When a student would get a test back with an A on it after a long struggle with lots of confusion and frustration, it was awesome to see his or her face light up.”
Born in Ohio, Wetzel was raised in a small town in central Illinois. He enjoyed playing football and basketball as a child and still appreciates sports today. In his free time, he likes to watch basketball or play in rec leagues. Someday he hopes to travel to Tahiti.
Wetzel’s other hobbies include relaxing with a movie (his favorite is Zootopia) or playing board games with friends and family. A few of his other favorite things are popcorn, the song Banner of Love by Luminate, and verse 14 from 1 Corinthsians 16, which says, “Do everything in love.” His favorite Bible story is the Sermon on the Mount.
If Wetzel could meet anyone in the world, he would choose Helen Keller and ask her about learning abstract words and overcoming adversity. He’d also like to meet Luol Deng, a professional basketball player who stands for many of the things Wetzel believes in.
