Alpha Omega Academy computer teacher Laureen Mehlert considers herself a computer geek. She holds a bachelor of information technology degree in computer systems and a master of education degree in instructional technology, and said that studying at an online university helped her gain an understanding of what it takes to succeed in an online learning environment. Her favorite part of teaching is interacting with students.
“I love it when the students call into office hours to clarify their understanding and the discussion turns into that pivotal moment of clarity for the student,” Mehlert said.
The oldest of three children, Mehlert was born at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. Her family moved frequently during her first nine years of life, until her father retired from the Air Force to a small town in North Dakota where she completed middle and high school.
Today, Mehlert is married and has two children who participate in competitive swimming. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, reading, creating music and graphic designs on the computer, playing piano, and computer programming. One thing Mehlert has always wanted to do is join a band.
Mehlert’s favorite bible verse is Psalms 118:24, “This is the day which the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
If she could meet anyone in the world, Mehlert would choose Mother Theresa because she finds her to be inspirational.
