Math Course for Grades 11, 12
Probability and Statistics at Alpha Omega Academy trains students in an overview of basic concepts of statistics with an emphasis on descriptive statistics.
Probability and Statistics at Alpha Omega Academy trains students in an overview of basic concepts of statistics with an emphasis on descriptive statistics. Students start off learning the key concepts of data, samples, and populations and also create visual representations of data sets, such as histograms and bar graphs. In addition, students describe the central tendency and spread of data for a data set and look for patterns in a data set to determine models based on those patterns in the first semester.
In the second semester, students take a more in-depth look at statistics and its many applications with an emphasis on inferential statistics. Students are also introduced to advanced counting techniques, as well as probability and its applications. They learn the concept of sample space, basic probability, and the difference between theoretical and experimental probabilities. They also take a more in-depth look at probability with an emphasis on compound and conditional probabilities.
Students explore normal data distributions and its properties and the standard normal distributions and its usefulness as a probability model for making inferences about a population. They also learn hypothesis testing using various significance tests such as 1- and 2-sample z-tests, 1- and 2-sample t-tests, significance tests involving proportions, and chi-square goodness of fit tests. Each unit of the course contains quizzes and a test to evaluate progress and student mastery.
Algebra II is a prerequisite course.
A graphing calculator is required for this course.
