Our September student of the month at Alpha Omega Academy is Meghan Johnson, a junior who serves as an editor for the Blue Umbrella student newsletter. According to Mrs. Kimberly Smith, who nominated the Central Arizona native, Meghan was chosen for this month’s honor “for her thoroughness and dedication to her work.”
My AOA Story
This will be my third year with the academy. My mom is a teacher here at AOA, and she decided to enroll me and my brother after her first year of teaching. I love the flexibility of my schedule and learning. I love listening to music while I do my schoolwork. It helps me focus, and in traditional schooling I would not be able to do that.
My Connection to Other Students
The Student Center was a big surprise to me. When you’re enrolled in online school, it can feel a little bit isolating; but with the Student Center you get to meet other people your age who are doing the same schoolwork you’re doing and going through some of the same things you are.
I like English because I enjoy the writing I get to do in it. I also write for the Blue Umbrella. My mom was actually the one who told me about it, but I wasn’t sure how to go about joining. One day I attended “Writers Block” and asked Mrs. Smith about it. She said all I had to do was come to a meeting! I’ve been with the Blue Umbrella for about a year now. I, of course, love having the opportunity to write and have it published, but I also enjoy interacting with the other students on the team.
I really like Christian rap and artists like Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Red. The music doesn’t match my personality type at all, but I love it!
I have two brothers and we love to go out to eat together, especially at Chipotle.
My Growth as a Person
About three years ago, I began working with my grandparents whose health has been declining. While it’s a blessing for them to get the help, it’s also a blessing for me to be able to help them. Working with them has helped me to mature and learn how to be responsible. While I still have a long way to go, it has definitely helped me grow as a person.
My Future Plans
I want to get my education degree and teach elementary school. I also really want to travel. If I’m not a teacher, I would be a psychologist because I’m really interested in mental health and I have a heart for others.
My Words of Wisdom
No matter what happens, always remember that God has a plan for your life. Life can get so crazy and sometimes it feels like everything has been flipped upside down, but God still has a plan and He knows what He’s doing. All you have to do is trust.
